Episode 40: Beatles For Sale (1964)

1964 was a busy year for The Beatles. Having recently conquered the world back in February of the same year after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, Beatlemania was in full swing and it wasn’t slowing down anytime soon. The Beatles’s schedules were rigorous and exhausting having recently come off of their North American tour, the boys would split their time between radio and television appearances, recordings and much more.

Beatles For Sale was the mark of the mature period for The Beatles with more introspective lyrics and experimenting more in the musical sense, a practice that would continue to follow the group for the remainder of their career, especially on their 1965 album, Rubber Soul.

In the 40th episode of Beatle Banter, Rachel hosts the show again and takes us back to 1964 when The Beatles released Beatles For Sale. She talks about how the four were particularly busy with recordings, telelvision show appearances, touring and much more and how the exhaustion of their rigorous schedule and the pressure to fill this album with new material led to a departure from the upbeat tones The Beatles were known for.
