Frank and Rachel continue their discussion of the different genres The Beatles incorporated into their songs.  The genres they talk about for this episode: love songs,  baroque pop, music hall, parody and much more.

Episode 17: Different Genres Part 2

If there’s anything else to know about The Beatles, it’s this: they were a group that weren’t afraid to experiment with all kinds of sounds and things. Take for example on A Day in the Life: you hear the orchestra building and building up to a crescendo at the end.

Revolution 9 is another one which it was John Lennon playing around in the studio with a bunch of different sounds. It’s a very avant garde piece as it’s a sound collage if anything.

If you listen to their earlier records such as Please, Please Me, you’ll notice that its a lot of love songs and they have a cutesy feel to them. Whereas if you look at say Abbey Road from 1969, you’ll notice its much more mature as far as lyrics and sound. It’s amazing what they accomplished over the course of ten years isn’t it?

What’s your favorite era of The Beatles? What’s your favorite album?
