Episode 2: HELP! (1965)

In the second episode of Beatle Banter, Frank and Paul discuss The Beatles’s fifth studio album and soundtrack to their second movie of the same name: HELP!

HELP! is the fifth studio album The Beatles made.  It was released on August 6th, 1965.  The album cover shows The Beatles spelling out a word in flag semaphore, which is the practice of conveying information at a distance through the usage of hand signals.  The word they are spelling however, isn’t the word, “HELP” in fact, it’s not a word at all! They’re spelling out NUJV.  According to the album photographer, Robert Freeman, he had the idea to have The Beatles spelling out the word, “HELP” but he didn’t like how it looked.  He states his reasoning for changing the positioning of the arms "I had the idea of semaphore spelling out the letters "HELP". But when we came to do the shot, the arrangement of the arms with those letters didn't look good. So we decided to improvise and ended up with the best graphic positioning of the arms. “

This was also the title of the film of the same name, which was a follow up to their 1964 film A Hard Day’s Night.  Seven of the songs are included throughout the film such as “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away,” “Ticket to Ride” and  “Another Girl” to name a few.
